I am highlighting women’s struggle against gender-based violence and sexual assault. It is a global issue.
Jessica Eva is launching a Photographic Exhibition and Book Event at PS Art Space Fremantle on the 2nd of August 2019.
The exhibition and book chronicle Jessica Eva’s meeting with the Red Brigade Lucknow, an Indian grassroots organisation that campaigns for women’s rights and combats violence against women on the streets and in the home.
Jessica Eva travelled to India in 2016 to meet the women of the Red Brigade in Lucknow India face to face, to collect the women’s stories first hand and document their portraits. This exhibition and book launch showcase a photographic compilation providing a poignant view of the women that comprise the movement. The exhibition uses large-scale photographs to monumentalise the immense strength and humanity of the women, using imagery that is both powerful and vibrant.
The project by Jessica Eva explores the issue of violence against women in a global context. Her photographic work seeks to use the female gaze to subvert mainstream depictions of women.
On the 10th of August there will be a panel discussion centred around the idea of the female gaze and how photography can be used as an empowering tool to challenge perceptions of women. The discussion will be chaired by Megan Hyde. It will feature local practicing artists Jessica Eva, Lucille Martin and Olivia Colja, as well as artist/academic Panizza Allmark (PhD).
Women in Red: Portraits of The Red Brigade Lucknow exhibition and book will be launched at
PS Art Space [22 Pakenham Street Fremantle] on 2nd August 2019. Exhibition runs 3 - 30th August 2019.
All profit from the sale of the book will be donated to the Red Brigade Lucknow.
